Americans Urged to Shop Art and Support Local Artists on Artists Sunday, the Sunday after Thanksgiving
Give the gift of art this holiday season. Shop with local artists on Artists Sunday, Nov 29, the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
(Nov. 23, 2020) – During a holiday marked by social distancing, American consumers are encouraged to support their communities this holiday season by buying meaningful and unique gifts from artists and craftspeople on the inaugural Artists Sunday, set for this Sunday, Nov. 29.
More than 500 communities and 3,300 artists, artisans and craftspeople are participating in the nationwide art-shopping movement. A gift of the arts makes a heartfelt connection with friends and loved ones, while supporting local artists and boosting the local economy.
In the face of COVID-19, creating a ‘Black Friday for the Arts’ couldn’t be more urgent. A normal year sees 100 million people attending arts and crafts festivals, fairs, and art walks in the United States. But the pandemic has shut down 96 percent of in-person art shows and festivals, robbing many artists of their livelihood. The creative economy has lost more than $14 billion since the pandemic took hold last March, according to a survey by Americans for the Arts.
“Art offers what we all need right now – a meaningful way to stay connected with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers,” said Artists Sunday founder Christopher Sherman. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday may offer the hot deals on the latest gadgets, but Artists Sunday provides you a special opportunity to give a personal gift this holiday season.”
If consumers cannot find local artists in their community, they can visit the Artists Sunday Online Directory and search for artists by location and the types of craft. Also featured is a Sales, Specials, Events and Promotions Calendar of both online and socially-distanced in-person events and promotions, as well as special offers and deals on a wide range of art that fits any budget.
“When you buy local art, you’re giving a gift to your community,” Sherman says. “You’re supporting the artists that add beauty and enrich all of our lives.”
